When Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the designer of the 300 SLR race car, watched the success of the Mercedes at the Mille Miglia in 1955, he was also thinking about how to equip the 300 SLR with a closed roof , in order to be more suitable for future endurance events.
The 300 SLR car was based on the famous W196 Formula 1 champion of the 1954-55 season. The abbreviation SLR stands for Sport Light-Racing (Sport Leicht-Rennen). Considered one of the most beautiful race cars ever built, the new SLR featured a slightly different inline-eight engine with an enlarged displacement of 3 liters. Of the nine 300 SLR frames, two, the 0007/55 and 0008/55, were converted into 300 SLR Coupés with closed bodies and gullwing doors. They were designed for the upcoming Carrera Panamericana.
The body of the SLR coupe is made of Elektron sheets, a magnesium alloy that is lighter than aluminum. The semi-circular windshield creates very little wind resistance. As with the SLR race car, the coupe driver must spread his legs behind the steering wheel to control the pedals. Under the hood is a longitudinally-mounted eight-cylinder engine, housed behind the front axle, producing 234 lb-ft of peak torque at 5,950 rpm and a maximum output of 310 horsepower at 7,400 rpm.
