Product Description
In the 1950s, the D50 racing car should have become the image representative of LANCIA in the F1 race. However, the D50 brought almost no new ideas. Famous car designer Vittorio Jano was entrusted to develop a racing car for LANCIA. This racing car not only required fashion and beauty, but also required speed. It was faster than competitors of the same type at that time, and at least able to fight against the powerful Mercedes-Benz Silver Sword at that time. W196.
On February 20, 1954, at the new car conference, Jano showed the outside world the chic and creative Bolide for the first time. The structural design of Vittorio Jano was extremely advanced at the time. The single-seater racing car used a 2.5-liter V8 engine with a power of 260 horsepower. The engine cylinders were arranged at 90 degrees, and the engine axis was set at 12 degrees to the left of the longitudinal axis of the car.
This arrangement shifts the engine drive shaft away from the car's central axis, providing valuable space for the driver's seat to be lowered, ultimately improving the car's aerodynamics. Another structural feature to be emphasized is that the engine becomes an integral part of the car's frame structure and thus acts as a stabilizing load-bearing member.
Another outstanding feature is that the layout of the two fuel tanks is very worthy of attention. Jano set up two long and narrow fuel tanks on the left and right sides of the body and between the front and rear wheels. This layout not only brings good aerodynamic characteristics to the car, but the 200-liter fuel tank capacity also eliminates the need for refueling during the race. It is based on the idea that driving characteristics will become more stable with less fuel in the tank, making it easier for the driver to predict in order to take appropriate driving behaviour. Compared with the rear fuel tank layout of competitors, the side fuel tank layout is obviously more advantageous.
The famous racing driver Juan Manuel Fangio won his fourth World Cup championship with this car.
After the LANCIA D50, CMC will also launch the 1956 version of the Ferrari LANCIA D50.
