LANCIA D50 debuted at the Spanish Grand Prix in October 1954, but due to premature clutch failure, it had to retire in a hurry. Driver Alberto Ascari thought he was just unlucky. He was full of confidence and eager to try for the upcoming 1955 World Grand Prix. His company boss Gianni Lancia was full of strong expectations for winning.
The Monaco Grand Prix held on May 22, 1955 became the first test of the LANCIA D50 in the European Series Grand Prix after retiring from the scorching heat in Argentina.
Before the race, Alberto Ascari was unanimously favored. In the race, when Mercedes-Benz Silver Sword W 196 had been eliminated, he drove LANCIA D50 to lead the way. However, when he was driving towards a corner, an accident happened suddenly. His D50 hit the barrier on the track, unfortunately lost control and rushed out of the track, and finally fell into the harbor with the car. Fortunately, he was unharmed and he managed to free himself from the sinking car and swim back to shore, where he was checked and found to have a broken nose.
